What will happen if we do not renew the registration on an RV?

Our RV (fifth-wheel trailer) is parked at a consignment shop. They are trying to sell it for us. It has current registration and stickers on the license plate. The registration expires tomorrow. What will happen if we do not renew the registration? Will we get a ticket/fine?

1. That depends on the local laws. If it is at a consignment shop that is licensed to handle used vehicles, then they are licensed to have an untagged vehicle on their lot.

Now if you owe money on the RV, then the loan company may have a clause in your contract saying you must keep it insured at all times. You need to look at your contract. If required, many insurance companies offer a cheap coverage (about 15 to 25% of your regular coverage) where the RV is not used or transported anywhere.

If you have an unlicensed vehicle on your property on any other property and it is against local law, you can get a ticket for it but there is usually no points.

Call your local police and see what your area requires.

2. It depends on the state you live in. Call the DMV and ask them, they will be able to help you. If you live in Calif. and are not going to license a vehicle, you must get a certificate of non-operation. They charge a small fee for it,. There is no grace period, Some of the other states do the same.

3. Nothing will happen. If the RV does not sell, you can renew the registration later.
