Is renting an RV from a private party (neighbors, relatives, etc.) a good idea?

I'd like to rent an RV for a week or two to go on vacation with my family, but the commercial RV Rental places want $$$ plus mileage charges for a week, and then I still have to pay for fuel. Is it a good idea to rent from friends, neighbors, relatives, etc., or do I risk running into problems that wouldn't make it worth it? What happens if I get in an accident or it needs major repairs while I'm using it? How much should I offer to pay for rent?
