Is it better to rent an RV or to sleep in hotels when traveling across the USA?

We want to start our trip in Michigan, go down to Texas, west to Arizona and back to Michigan in 2 weeks. I have never used and RV before and I don't know if it's better to rent one or to sleep in hotels driving with a car. I have a 2 years old child and I am looking for the most stress free option.

Public Comments

1. go with the car. an r v is going to suck gas and will probably cost more in the long run.

2. Toddlers love hotels! They often have pools.

3. The RV probably won't be cheaper. However with a small child the RV will be less hassle than moving in/out of a hotel every night.

RV's swill gasoline, plan on 10MPG. You can't just park an RV anywhere and spend the night. Walmart will let you stay in their parking lots, considering they are everywhere it shouldn't be hard to find a free spot. You will need to go to RV parks occasionally to top of the fresh water and dump the "gray" water. An RV park can be just as expensive as a motel room to stay in.

The RV would be part of the fun though.

4. Definitely rent a car with unlimited mileage and sleep in motels
Any rented full size 4 door sedan will get you 25+ mpg on the highway The typical RV gets 10 mpg
When you're driving the big empty spaces a big 4 door car is safer and more comfortable than smaller cars are
As noted rental cars come with unlimited mileage , RV's on the other hand come with a maximum number of no cost miles per rental period and anything over that will cost you x amount of money per mile and given the size of America that could add up real quickly.
With the exception of WalMart parking lots ,campsites for RVs are not free
A KOA RV campsite at Leander TX will cost you the same thing as spending the night in the Motel 6 that's about 10 miles away.
Just so you know : America is full of good motel rooms that can be had at < $80.00 per night.
Safe trip

5. the problem with RV's is that they are uncomfortable to sleep in and they are very high maintenance.

the one and only problem with hotels is that they cost a pretty penny.

why not do hotels..........but then do camping in tents sometimes. or cabins. cabins can be expensive too. but nothing beats a cabin. especially a cabin with lots of amenities.
