How long before travelling should I book an RV?

A friend and I plan to drive around the US in September. We have booked our flight already. In terms of getting the best price on an RV, how late should we leave booking the RV? My friend thinks we might get really good deals in August but I'm a bit scared to leave it until the last month and miss out all together.
